Who We Are

Nobody really.  Just a guy with a couple of good friends supporting the community in a way where most would rather not endure such an affliction.  Fishing would have been a much more enjoyable use of weekends when there were still fish in the river. 😉

Fighting the elements since 2008

This whole enterprise started with some fields originally sprigged with hybrid Coastal Bermuda (many years prior) and cut for cattle hay in the beginning.  We have since added a few acres of Tifton 44 and have followed trends in science and technology since that time.  All I can say is that the results speak for themselves.

Chemical-Free?

Bermuda has CAN NOT be grown without chemicals.  Sorry, if you are looking for organic hay, this is not the place to buy bales of weeds.

The biggest advancement in technology for Bermudagrass forage has been Bayer Rezilon preemergent in the mid 2010’s.  Current price is around $400 per quart and 3 oz per acre in fall and spring have been a game changer.  That took care of the winter ryegrass (usually dies before Bermuda is ready for first cut) and summer crabgrass (very difficult to dry and keep dry behind heavy dew) so that we have have a more uniform forage (almost pure Bermuda) that dries quickly to squeeze hay cuttings between summer rains usually forecast every 3-4 days in Alabama.

The offsetting setback has been the little Asian flies that show up every summer since mid 2010’s that like to lay eggs on every single stalk of Bermuda grass as they swarm all Alabama Bermuda fields that are attracted by fertilization and intense management.  The result is the Bermuda Stem Maggot (BSM) that stops growth by boring into the top of the Bermuda stalk when left unchecked.  It is like cutting the top out of a Pine Tree.  So, you keep them at bay, or cut to restart growth depending on growth cycle.  With no systemic treatments as of 2024, the answer to date has been 1-2 oz of pyrethrin per acre.  This battle usually starts after the first cutting and can continue through the season into early fall.   It is really more of an art than a science when the season begins.
